On Saturday, at the meditation centre, Sunim (Korean title for monk), the Zen master, was preparing for a ceremony for the following day. Several of us were sitting around the Dharma hall, meditating, staring at the walls. Sunim was preparing a table with offerings of foods for the ceremony on Sunday. One of the students came into the Dharma hall and asked Sunim what he was doing. He said that he was preparing offerings for people’s deceased parents. The ceremony would assist the dead to get from hell into heaven. When he said that, he laughed heartily. The idea of moving dead people from hell into heaven by putting food on a table seemed very amusing to him.
